Cappadocia Blue Tour Places to Visit
Underground Cities Cappadocia Turkey
As we have just mentioned, the first stop of the Cappadocia Blue Tour will be the underground cities located here. We will start with Ozkonak Underground City, one of the underground cities, or continue with Derinkuyu Underground City and Kaymaklı Underground City, respectively. Underground cities are historical beauties built by people in ancient times to protect themselves from the enemies and the armies passing by.
The exact date of its construction is not known, but according to estimates, it is estimated that it was built around 400 BC. It has been transformed into a living space where food can be stored in order to avoid humidity and maintain the temperature. At the same time, people have been given the opportunity to easily settle and live here.
We can say that this city, where the spaces are connected to each other by tunnels, is in the form of an apartment. Unfortunately, not all places are completely cleaned nowadays. It is also a product of a thought that the defense system for the bolt stones in the underground city is well developed. The said place consists of four floors.
Barns have been built at the entrance so that animals can easily enter. At the same time, mechanisms have been added to the walls to tie the ropes. Towards the lower floors, Ozkonak Underground City begins to transform into a place where people can live. These parts consist of four great halls. The four large halls in question are also divided into ten smaller rooms. It is noticed that some of these small rooms are used as cellars and a few other rooms are used for hiding. Some rooms are divided into the extended family and nuclear family rooms. It is even said that the cavities in some rooms are baby beds.
Likewise, there are 3 ventilations, 4 graves, and 8 wells in this underground city. In the part where you will encounter places with columns, there are jugs, wine, and water tanks.
You can go to the bottom floor of the city, that is, to the fourth floor, through a narrow tunnel. There is enough space for only one person to pass through this narrow tunnel. But the most interesting feature of this floor is that it was used as a prison at the time.
Derinkuyu Underground City
There are 200 known underground cities in the Cappadocia region. However, only 36 of these underground cities were found. Derinkuyu Underground City is one of the largest underground cities found.
According to estimates, it was built around 3000 BC. However, it is estimated that this place was mostly used during the Byzantine period. It takes its name from the drinking water well located at a depth of approximately 60-70 meters. There was no settlement on Derinkuyu Underground City until 1830. It was found completely by chance in 1963 and opened its doors to visitors in 1967. It is located in an area of approximately 4 kilometers, but only 2.5 kilometers of this area has been opened to visitors. This 2.5-kilometer area also consists of 8 floors. The depth of 8 floors is also 50 meters. However, if all floors are completely cleaned and opened, the depth of this underground city can reach up to 85 meters. Thus, the number of floors increases to 12 or 13.
As soon as you pass through a narrow passage, you enter Derinkuyu. When you walk down 5 meters from this entrance in the form of a corridor, you will see the first floor of this city. On this floor, the winery, barn, kitchen, and living rooms welcome you.
What you will see on the second floor will be almost the same as on the first floor. Here, too, there are supply warehouses, living areas, and a kitchen. You will also see an area that was used as a barn at the time.
On the third floor of Derinkuyu Underground City, something very interesting will welcome you. There is a missionary school on this floor. Apart from that, you will encounter a cemetery, confessional areas, and a church in the shape of a cross. There is also a long tunnel here. It is said that this tunnel was a tunnel leading to all underground cities in Cappadocia.
In this section, the security needs of the past are taken into account. What we will encounter on the fourth floor will be the dungeons. There are also ventilation channels, cisterns, water wells, and cemeteries in this part.
Five, Six, Seven, and Eighth Floors
The fifth floor of the underground city appears as a distribution center that unites all five floors of the city. You descend to the sixth floor of the city through the tunnel that follows. Here, too, there are five rooms carved into the tunnel. The tunnels on the sixth floor have tunnels that a single person can pass through with a little difficulty. When you go down to the seventh floor, there is a large meeting hall, water well, cemetery, and church. The last floor, namely the eighth floor, is the last part open to visitors. Here, there are small rooms and ventilation shafts.
Kaymaklı Underground City consists of 8 floors just like Derinkuyu. It also has a capacity of approximately 5,000 people. This underground city includes baptismal stones, churches, and cemeteries. Likewise, it has a tunnel of about 10 kilometers. In addition to tunnels, there are also traps, labyrinths, and dead-end tunnels. The purpose of all of this is to be protected from the enemy.
In the same way, wine houses and dining areas are also available here. Kaymaklı Underground City, which contains many other things, is a city that excites you as you tour.
There are stables on the first floor just like in other underground cities. When we go down to the second floor of Kaymaklı Underground City, cemeteries, churches, and baptismal stones welcome us. Here, too, there are bolt stones that we encounter in many underground cities. There are also dead-end tunnels, labyrinths, and traps in this city, which is also a piece of history.
Apart from all these, most houses and dining halls are also located on the third floor.
We can say that the most exciting part of Kaymaklı Underground City is its last floor. To enter here you will have to use a rather narrow tunnel. Here, too, a very low and narrow tunnel was created in order to slow down the enemy or any foreigner. But behind this tunnel, you will come across a kitchen, a tandoor, and a food warehouse.
It is one of the most impressive valleys of the Cappadocia region. Another name is Red Valley. It takes its name from the redness of its rocks. This is what makes Kızılcukur Valley different from other valleys. To walk here, you will have to pass through several tunnels. The longest of these tunnels is 37 meters. In this valley, where vineyards accompany you, you will come across a church just like in other valleys. You can also visit the Cross Church here during your valley tour.
It is the place with the oldest history in Cappadocia. Christian dervishes lived here in ancient times. It is a very rich place in terms of churches. It contains many churches such as St. Jean Church, John the Baptist Church, Cavusin Church, Cross Church, Uzumlu Church.
The valley in question takes its name from the dovecotes located here. Pigeon breeding started here in the 9th century. The reason for this is that pigeon manure is very good for the vineyards in the Cappadocia region. This valley is as impressive as the other valleys of Cappadocia. It is a valley that must be visited and seen in order to walk and relax in nature.
